Discovery Home Care Inc., (DHC) a nonprofit organization, is an Emergency Care Shelter provider whose purpose is to provide youth between the ages of 6-18 who are homeless, abused, neglected or displaced from there families a short term safe and nurturing environment.

According to the National Runaway Switchboard (NRS), between 1.3 and 2.8 million runaway and homeless youth live on the streets of America each year and 1 in 7 youth will runaway from home before the ages of 18. NRS statistics suggest there are between 244 and 1,364 homeless and runaway youth surviving in Gaston County. In 2007 NRS recorded 4,269 calls from runaway youth in North Carolina, 834 of those calls came from the 704 area code. Pinpointing homeless youth in Gaston County is difficult because many may be staying with friends or relatives rather than actually living on the street.
